چکیده

[1] A case study relative to the observation of unexpected liquid water in an apparently cloudless atmosphere is presented. Microwave radiometer profiler observations on 14 April 2008 at Boulder, Colorado, USA, showed an increase in the liquid water path with values higher than 0.05 mm and corresponding relative humidity saturation from 4.75 to 6.75 km above the ground level in profiles retrieved using a neural network algorithm. The formation of small supercooled droplets identified in the microwave retrieval of the temperature and relative humidity vertical profiles may result from nucleation stimulated by a mountain lee wave. The presented analysis reveals the existence of supercooled liquid water in the mid troposphere related to a wave activity that occurred in a sky condition classifiable as ‘‘clear’’ and describes an atmospheric scenario consistent with the observation of the so-called twilight zone. Crystal Structure, Thermal Properties, and Shock-Wave-Induced Nucleation of 1,2-Bis(phenylethynyl)benzene

We report the single crystal structure and thermal properties of 1,2-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (PEB), revealing that PEB forms a metastable liquid at rt, ca. 35 °C below its melting point. Accelerated nucleation of PEB from its supercooled state was induced with high reproducibility by a shock wave with ca. 15 ns duration and 1.2 GPa peak pressure. By conducting shock wave experiments with vary...

A physically constrained classical description of the homogeneous nucleation of ice in water.

Liquid water can persist in a supercooled state to below 238 K in the Earth's atmosphere, a temperature range where homogeneous nucleation becomes increasingly probable. However, the rate of homogeneous ice nucleation in supercooled water is poorly constrained, in part, because supercooled water eludes experimental scrutiny in the region of the homogeneous nucleation regime where it can exist o...

Free energy landscapes for homogeneous nucleation of ice for a monatomic water model.

We simulate the homogeneous nucleation of ice from supercooled liquid water at 220 K in the isobaric-isothermal ensemble using the MW monatomic water potential. Monte Carlo simulations using umbrella sampling are performed in order to determine the nucleation free energy barrier. We find the Gibbs energy profile to be relatively consistent with that predicted by classical nucleation theory; the...

Observation of the density minimum in deeply supercooled confined water

Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) is used to measure the density of heavy water contained in 1D cylindrical pores of mesoporous silica material MCM-41-S-15, with pores of diameter of 15 1 Å. In these pores the homogenous nucleation process of bulk water at 235 K does not occur, and the liquid can be supercooled down to at least 160 K. The analysis of SANS data allows us to determine the abs...

Correlation between thermodynamic anomalies and pathways of ice nucleation in supercooled water.

The well-known classical nucleation theory (CNT) for the free energy barrier towards formation of a nucleus of critical size of the new stable phase within the parent metastable phase fails to take into account the influence of other metastable phases having density/order intermediate between the parent metastable phase and the final stable phase. This lacuna can be more serious than capillary ...
